| 20th January 2002 The Association of Independent Music launches AIMING EAST the "rough guide" to the music businesses of China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan
AIMING EAST is a comprehensive business guide for tapping UK music's potential in the above territories, based on the first hand experiences of AIM's International Committee.
It builds on their fact-finding mission to Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Taipei, Seoul and Toyko revealing that, amongst other things: - The potential for UK dance music in these territories is vast.
- A knock-on effect of high property prices in Japan is that mobile phone culture amongst kids is completely dominant. Once music becomes easily accessible via mobile telephony, the market is set to explode.
- By the end of 2002 over 200 million people are expected to have broadband access in China, that's 4 times the population of the UK.
The mission, supported by Trade Partners UK and the British Council, has already seen the first ever licensing deal between a UK independent and China signed, the day after China joined the WTO. A further development is the British Council hosting the web site of Chi Chung, Hong Kong's answer to John Peel, which is specifically geared towards promoting new British music.
Despite the report's depth and insight, it can only scratch the surface in understanding the complexities of each market. Hence the networking taking place, part of a deliberate strategy to buildon relationships and develop a mutual understanding of respective industries.
With AIM committed to building on this valuable initiative, and AIMING EAST simply a milestone along that path, it would appear that trade is set to flourish.
